In 2016, YMCA Disability Services and David House joined forces to start a weekly sports program called All Abilities at the YMCA-managed RecWest Braybrook Sports Complex. Now in its fourth year, the program has expanded from 15 participants to a massive 120.
All Abilities is a basketball program that focuses on teaching people with a disability the skills and drills of the game, as well as developing cognitive and motor skills. Program coordinator Ashley Cameron says this is due to the amount of benefits provided to participants.
“All Abilities allows people with a disability to be more physically active, enjoy social interaction and develop leadership skills,” said Ashley.
In order to raise money for equipment such as uniforms and basketballs, RecWest Braybrook hosts an annual All Abilities versus All Stars basketball game. The All Stars team is made up of YMCA staff members, and this year RecWest Braybrook hosted the game on Wednesday 10 July.
Leeann de Visser is one of the YMCA staff members who has been playing on the All Stars team since the first game in 2017.
“Every time I play I can see how much the All Abilities team have improved... Their support for each other and the All Stars team is infectious,” said Leeann.
The program leaves a lasting impression on everyone involved including participants, their families and YMCA staff. If you would like to find out more about the All Abilities program, please call RecWest Braybrook on (03) 9311 3400.
