Making breakfast simple

Are you too sleepy, rushed or just not hungry enough to eat breakfast? 

Sometimes it can feel way too hard to fit something healthy into your morning routine, leaving you running on empty and craving a sugar hit by mid-morning.

The thing is we perform better when we start the day with a healthy breakfast.

Here are some great reasons to squeeze something healthy into your morning routine:

  1. It’ll kick start your metabolism - you’ll burn more kilojoules (energy) over the day.
  2. Eating breakfast can improve your exercise performance.
  3. Skipping breakfast is associated with weight gain – exactly why is not clear, but most experts agree that eating breakfast is essential if you want to lose weight.

Even though not everyone wants or needs to eat breakfast, it makes sense to start the day with a healthy meal.

Try these nutritious meal options:

  • A handful of raw mixed nuts and a banana.  Add a small tub of plain or low sugar yoghurt.
  • Half a can of baked beans (low salt) on wholegrain toast. Or if you plan ahead you could even make your own baked beans by slow cooking your favourite beans, perhaps cannellini of butter beans, in a fresh tomato sauce, adding some paprika and cayenne pepper to spice things up!
  • Homemade muesli – make your own on the weekend –  combine oats, nuts, seeds, dried fruit in a large storage container. Serve with milk, yoghurt and fresh fruit. You can take this one on the go in a jar too!
  • Bircher muesli – soak ½ cup oats and a small handful of raisons overnight in water. In the morning add some grated apple, chopped almonds and milk of your choice.

3⁄4 cup

rolled oats

1 1⁄2

ripe bananas

1⁄2 cup

plain low-fat yoghurt

1⁄4 cup

apple juice

1⁄2 cup

skim milk

1 Cup

mixed berries (fresh or frozen)

1 teaspoon



1 teaspoon

almond meal



  • Place oats into a blender or food processor and blend to a fine consistency.
  • Add remaining ingredients and blitz until smooth.
